Let’s get to it! The marriage license is an important document that makes sure your special day ends in a legal marriage. Yes, we know this isn’t the most fun part of the wedding planning process, but it is one of the most important. Although this is something you as a couple must do, we are here to help you get your legal ducks in order. Without further ado, here is a simple yet comprehensive guide to getting your marriage licence here in Ottawa.
1. Be old enough
You and your future husband or wife must be over the age of 16 to legally marry in Ontario. If you are not yet 18, a parent or legal guardian must come with you to apply.
2. Make an appointment
You’ll need to book a time to attend City Hall to receive the licence. Don’t just turn up unannounced! To submit an application form and make an appointment click here.
3. ID please!
You’ll both need to provide two pieces of government issued ID such as a passport or driving licence. Make sure that the documents have not expired. Click here for the full list of ID that is accepted.
4. Money, money, money
The City of Ottawa charges a $182.00 fee non-refundable fee for the marriage licence.

5. Licenced to thrill
The marriage licence can be used anywhere in Ontario and, but expires after 90 days. You’ll need to keep it safe and present it to the officiant on your wedding day. Once you’ve declared your love for each other and the wedding is finished, they will tidy up the paperwork and send the official record of your marriage back to Service Ontario. It can take up to 3 months for you to receive your official marriage certificate, but you will be given a Record of Solemnization which is legal proof you are newlyweds until then!
